As some of you will be aware Tom Watts won the Wrasse section of the CLF this weekend and we are well stoked for him, what makes it extra special was he used a Z-Man TRD rigged weedless to win the event. Everybody knows Z-Man make great Wrasse lures due to their durability but this is the first time we have heard of a TRD being used. Here’s Tom account pf the day.
“Got up yesterday morning knowing the tides were all wrong and we were to be fishing a falling tide but as the clock was ticking already and having missed the Friday afternoon shift due to work commitments we couldn’t just ‘chill’ so out the door and a mega hike later we were fishing a rocky mark with weed and gulleys. Wrasse territory! Joined by Olivier Geyer and Dan Sales, two equally mad for it lure anglers I was soon watching them both striking into fish but just failing to get a hook up. I’d had a few nips but nothing positive. All the nips were coming on the drop so i decided to give a trd mounted on a sz1 weedless hook and a 7gram cheberushka weight a go. A cast at a submerged rock and let it slide down the face. A couple of seconds to settle on the bottom then a upwards flick of the rod tip was all it took to get a bite. Didn’t connect but just let it hang in the water for a few seconds and the rod hooped over. These lures are so soft and durable. When other lures are losing chunks due to the limpet crushing teeth these things have, the trds just return to shape with hardly a mark on them. The action only stopped about an hour into the flooding tide when they seemed to want the chase. Switched to a diezel minnow but I only had the larger 4 inch ones on me and after too many nips, frustration got the better of me so I persevered with the trd until I got the solid takes again. It wasn’t long! A change of mark and it was exactly the same there bite after bite just a struggle to connect but these things have relatively small mouths so it’s to be expected. The same fish hit the lure in exactly the same spot 3 times then on the fourth cast it nailed it. This time it was heavy. Not the mental head banging like the others. A real power house of a fish. Safely on the mat it measures 52.5. Having not seen anyone I wasn’t sure whether it was big enough or not. Absolutely over the moon to find out I was joint first with a fish i worked so hard for. Cornish lure festival: brilliant comp fished with brilliant people. Anyone who hasn’t targeted these things get on it they go like trains and the takes can be insane.”
Looks like Wrasse anglers will have to add the TRD to the list of Z-Man lures they already use.
