As we got out of the car for the 5th round of the LL Series on the GUC at Warwick our heart sank – the canal was frozen over. A quick run up and down the bank showed a few clear patches but this was going to be touch and go.
Over fifty angler had booked in for this event and at 8:30 we put it to the vote, fish today or postpone. Well the answer was not in doubt, everybody to a man and women wanted to fish today – total respect to you all!
So by 9am all anglers had been released and were fishing were ever they could find a break in the ice, under bridges, tree and next to boats. We firmly believed thats todays match would be won by one angler just catching one or at the most two fish. Well how wrong we were, after two hours Predator Tackle A were on a meter of fish and several other teams had caught 2 or more perch.
As lunch time came rumours that the Perchmeisters were on over 2 meters of Perch and to everybody’s relief the ice was melting up and down the canal. One team that was struggling though was the league leaders Perch Gang who still had not caught a single fish.
With less than one hour to go a boat went through the section and reports were coming back that the Zander had started to feed.
Before we knew it 3O’clock came and cards were handed back in. We were pleasantly surprised to see that only 6 teams hadn’t caught and several teams had caught more than 2 fish. The largest Perch to come out was 35cm and also good Zander of 54cm.
Once everything was added up the winning team was Jamie Potts and Carl Arcus Perchmeisters with an amazing 274cm! Another team with big smiles on their faces were Perch Gang, Danny had come good in the last hour catching over 2 meters of Zander for a total of 258cm giving them second place with and an unassailable lead in the series.
Well the final match is on the 12 February on the Gloucester Canal, until then a big thank you to our sponsors and see you all in Gloucester.
