Well its almost 2 years since we introduced the Ned Rig to the UK and although we had utmost confidence in the method and lures used, who would have though it would become so popular and used by so many anglers up and down the country.
Over those 2 years we have answered hundreds of questions on what and what not to do and with the rivers just opening for the new season we thought it would be a good time to see what kit best suits the method and how to fish it.
The key to the Ned Rig is the buoyancy of the lure in conjunction with a very light jighead called a ShroomZ which will give you the ideal presentation. The buoyancy comes from Z-Man Elaztech which once you give it a bit of a stretch will sit bolt up right in the water. The ShroomZ comes in various weights but a good starter is a 1/10oz while you get your confidence. Try to steer away from the heavy weights unless you are fishing large lakes etc with more than 15-20ft of depth. As you gain confidence try to go lighter.
Cast your lure out and let it sink to the bottom under a tight line. When the Ned hits the bottom leave it, let it rest for around ten seconds. Any current or tow in the water will impart all the action you need. After 10 seconds drag your Ned Rig say a foot and leave it again for 5-10 seconds the longer the better, then just repeat. The key is the slower the better, the Ned Rig is just wafting in the water and acting very natural just like its surroundings. If you are as old as me you will remember a toy called a “Weeble” these toys would rock but couldn’t fall over – this is what’s happening at the end of your line.
There are other retrieves which all have their day which are listed below but the above is what I have found to be the most successful.
Kit wise, any spinning rod with a fast action and rated for light work say under 12g will work a treat. I’m biased but the Blue Bird 1-8g is ideal and it wont break the bank. Pair this with a suitable reel some braid around 0.8PE and couple of yards of 6-8lb fluorocarbon and you are ready to rock! If you think Pike are going to be a problem or if thats the species you are targeting simply tie on some AFW or Knot 2 Kinky and you’ll be fine, these thinner wires when tied direct to the Shroomz don’t impact on the action.
Colours and Lures – well you obviously have the TRD Finesse but don’t be stuck in your ways. You have the TRD TubeZ, Finesse ShadZ , Hula StickZ, Big TRD, CrusteaZ and hopefully soon the TRD HogZ. Colour wise I really believe in natural colours, Green Pumpkin and California Craw but other colours have their days – probably our most popular colour is Coppertreuse or Green Pumpkin Orange. At the end of the day it is what you have confidence in.
So in summary fish with as light as a jighead (ShroomZ) as you can, fish it as slow as you can and use a light spinning set up. Easy, now just add water and hold on.
